Mr. Editor: I like your suggestion … about arming slaves to resist our hateful enemies … since our enemies are arming our slaves against us, surely we ought to arm our faithful servants to meet the runaway and deserter … Mr. Lincoln relies so much upon the two hundred thousand he has stolen that, I think he would despair when he finds a like number of our best servants armed against him … I do not think it would be well for the Government to buy the slaves.
