Thousands protest police shootings in downtown St. Louis

9:56 PM

ST. LOUIS, United States, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of demonstrators gathered in the downtown of this U.S. city Saturday to protest recent fatal shootings of several black youths by the police in the region.
The rally was part of a four-day event named Ferguson October after the Aug. 9 shooting death of black teenager Michael Brown in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, which triggered two weeks of rioting.
The event started Friday evening, when hundreds of protestors chanting "Hands up, Don't shoot" confronted with police officers outfitted with riot gear, batons and gas masks near the Ferguson Police Station.
More protestors poured into St. Louis on Saturday, from New York, Philadelphia, Wisconsin and surrounding states. They demanded that Darren Wilson, a white Ferguson officer who fatally shot Brown, be charged.
"All of these cops should be in jail. They aren't doing nothing but shooting innocent young black men," said Mike Strong, a Ferguson resident.
Ten days after Brown's death, another black youth was killed by police at a location just six miles from where Brown was killed. Earlier this month, 18-year-old Vonderrit Myers Jr. was killed by an off-duty white police officer in St. Louis.
Ferguson October organizers said the event is aimed at raising public awareness of police misconduct and appealing for the demilitarization of police.
