Tensions grew as the Rochester and Strood by-election campaign began after Tory Mark Reckless defected to Ukip.
Tory MPs have called for an agreement to avoid “mutually assured destruction”, with Peter Bone, MP for Wellingborough, saying: “In seats where it is difficult for us to win, maybe let Ukip run in that seat, being endorsed by the Conservatives.”
The comments came two days after Tory defector Douglas Carswell became Ukip’s first MP, winning the Clacton by-election with a 12,404 majority.
Last night Ukip leader Nigel Farage, campaigning with Reckless and Carswell, rejected the idea, saying Ukip was “not a splinter group” of the Tories.
