A 26-year-old former model identified as Archana Pandey committed suicide at her Lokhadwala residence in Andheri west. The decomposed body was found hanging from the ceiling fan on Monday morning when the police broke open her apartment.
The police have booked Pandey’s boyfriend on the charge of abetment to suicide on Monday evening based on her suicide note.
According to the Versova police officers, they had received a call from the residence of the New Mhada buildings at the Lokhandwala back road at 10.30 am about foul stench emitting from the 12th floor.
On reaching the spot when the police officers opened the door of a rented apartment with duplicate keys, they found Pandey’s body in the bedroom. The police found a one page suicide note resting on the bed. Arundhati Rane, senior police inspector of Versova police station said that Pandey’s body was sent to Cooper hospital for post mortem. “Looking at the state of the body we assume that Pandey might have committed suicide three days ago,” said Rane. The police officers said that Pandey, who stayed alone in the city used to work as a finance consultant after she quit modelling in 2009. According to the police, in her suicide note she had named her boyfriend Umar Pathan for abandoning her at her time of need. She had written that Pathan and a woman named Sana had left her when she needed them the most. Police sources said that Pandey was earning well and did not have any financial problems however she was suffering from depression after her brother identified as Ashwin Pandey was arrested by the Gujarat crime branch in an international cheating scam. Archana had even registered a case of kidnapping after her brother went missing however she later found out that he had been arrested in a Nigerian scam of Rs 78 crore where Ashwin was found with Rs 76 lakh in his account, said police officials based on the statement given by her friends. Pandey had been making frequent rounds to Gujarat for Ashwin’s bail. She had requested Pathan to help her out but he had been avoiding her lately. “Pathan had sent me a screenshot of the message and asked me to check on her but when I called her she seemed normal and told me that she would not do anything stupid. I did not visit her house because I did not find it serious enough,” said Pandey’s close friend whose statement was recorded by the police on Monday. The police had earlier registered case a of accidental death, however, based on the suicide note the Versova police have booked Pathan.
